Ten Thousand Sundays

Sunday June 12:  Ten Thousand Sundays
Rev. David W. Chandler

Where has this church come in almost 200 years? Where will we be in another 200? Would you settle for 20 years – or even two? In his last sermon until January, Rev. Chandler considers the past – and the possibilities of our future.

Benefit Concert June 4 – “Pretty Girls Sing Soprano”

“Pretty Girls Sing Soprano” will perform live on Saturday, June 4, in the Sanctuary of UUCSB. Jennie Backstrom will open at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the performance will benefit “Women in Harmony,” a 58-voice women’s choir based in Portland, and our Church, which is home to the Saco Coffeehouse.

Our three goals for the evening are to sell-out (200 tickets), raise $1,000 for the church and treat ourselves and the community to a wonderful performance in our beautiful Sanctuary.

Ingrid Ayer-Richardson and Susan Mathews share a love of acoustic and a cappella music. “Pretty Girls Sing Soprano” gave their premiere performance at the Saco Coffeehouse, in our Parish Hall, in the fall of 2010. For those of us there that night—I don’t have to make a “hard sell.” If your calendar is free, I know you will get tickets. For those of us that weren’t—we missed something special! I recently attended the “Women in Harmony” concerts Moving On: Immigration in Song. Ingrid and Susan performed a duet of an original song written by Susan—wow! Don’t miss their encore performance at our church.

Patrick Colgan (aka Paddy) now adds a smooth tenor and a dash of killer guitar licks to “Pretty Girls.” Their harmonies turn heads as they perform a variety of Bluegrass, folk, and Americana tunes. Jennie Backstrom, formerly with the duo “PresenTense,” is a popular Coffeehouse performer with sweet vocals backed by keyboard and mandolin. She performed (for free) at our Spring for Community Auction in March and was awesome.

Please thank her for her support of our Church fundraising efforts.

If you enjoy good music with top-notch vocals check out the “Pretty Girls”—whether or not you believe the conventional wisdom that only “Pretty Girls Sing Soprano.” The suggested donation for tickets is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For more information call 207-282-0062 or visit www.uuchurchsacobiddeford.com. If you are interested in tickets, call the office and let Brian know. The Sanctuary was built in 1827 and is a wonderful music venue. Don’t miss this event. Seating is limited.

Why Is There Air?

May 29:  Why Is There Air?
Rev. David W. Chandler

Deferred from November, but not forgotten – ask the minister! Bill Cosby’s timeless question may be on your mind. Ask away! Ask some old ones. Ask some new ones. Ask anything at all. David will provide an answer before we fire up the grill.

Planning Ahead

Sunday May 15: Planning Ahead
Sabbatical Committee

The SPC explains it all to you – well, a lot of it anyway. They have been working all year to insure the worship and ministry of our community – and its operations and programs – thrive while David is away Sept. 1 – Dec. 31.

Come hear the plans.

Kingdom of the Sick

May 1:  Kingdom of the Sick
Rev. David W. Chandler

“Illness as metaphor” is Susan Sontag’s famous proposition. But how do we understand our relationship to those who are ill – and theirs to us? When physical or mental capacity is diminished, what new possibilities might be available?
